History of the project
Akula means "shark" in russian. It's also the designation of NATO for this nuclear submarine of attack. The Russian denomination is "Project 971 Shuka B".

This submarine is the reaction of the Soviet navy to the American Los Angeles class submarines. Akula was a recasting complete Alfa class (advanced already well for its time). From 1985 (date of the launching of first Akula K 263 Dolphin) at 1991, seven buildings prohibited the accesses to the North Pole with their eight tubes launches torpedoes (4 tubes of 21 "and 4 tubes of 25.6").

It is one of the most sophisticated submarines of the Russian navy. On the level of the sound levels, it is famous quieter than Los Angeles class, at least at low speed.

These marine monsters currently undergo the fate of all the building of the Russian navy, following the collapse of the economy, they rust at quay......
